Elder Sherman Henry Greene

Sherman Henry Greene departed this life on March 2, 2026. He was born on January 31, 1929, in Winchester, Kentucky, and was the last of five children born to the late Willie Roy Greene Jr. and Margaret Hall Greene. Sherman’s mother died when he was still an infant, and he was lovingly raised by his father and grandparents. He accepted Christ at an early age at Broadway Christian Church in Winchester, Kentucky. When he later moved his family to Lexington, Kentucky, he joined East Second Street Christian Church under the pastorate of the late Reverend O.B. Garner. Sherman served faithfully in many capacities: ordained as a Deacon (1953), sang in the Men’s Chorus, was a member of Christian Men’s Fellowship, served as a church bus driver, and served as a Christian Youth Fellowship advisor. He was ordained as an Elder in 1989 and was recently honored as Elder Emeritus. In December 1945, at the age of 16, Sherman enlisted in the United States Army Corps of Engineers. He served with the 97th Combat Engineer Unit, an all-Black regiment, and was later stationed in the Philippines and Guam with the 1315th Combat Engineers. He was awarded the Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. After returning home, Sherman attended West Kentucky Vocational School in Paducah, Kentucky. He worked for 30 years at Lexington Army Depot (Avon). Following his retirement, he started his own landscaping business. He worked with local caterers, serving as the head waiter for Derby parties and other social events. Sherman was deeply involved in his community. He was a charter member of the Winchester Little League and was team manager for a Pony League team for five years. He was an active member of several social and civic organizations. He served as Master of Mosaic Lodge Free & Accepted Masons for six years. He was also a member of the Bluegrass Consistory #46, 32nd Degree. He was a life member of the NAACP from 1946 to the present. He served the Lexington-Fayette County NAACP branch as Vice President (4 years), Treasurer (5 years), and Chair of the Membership Committee (20 years). He contributed his time to the Lexington Fair Housing Commission, serving as treasurer for eight years. He was also a member of the Lexington -Fayette County Race Relations Standing Committee. He was commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel in 2012. Sherman enjoyed many interests throughout his life. He was an avid bowler and a passionate gardener who loved growing vegetables and flowers. He took pride in his peach trees and roses. He loved taking photographs of anything in nature that caught his eye and was making “selfies” before cellphone cameras existed. He appeared in the movie “The Dreamer,” which was filmed in Lexington. He enjoyed traveling. He and Ann took many trips and cruises to various parts of the world. Sherman was truly a “people person” who never met a stranger. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and will be remembered for his kindness, warmth, and dedication to his faith, family, and community. He was grateful that he was able to live to see and play not only with his grandchildren but also with his great-grandchildren. Sherman was preceded in death by his parents and sisters: Vina Mae, Edna Mae, Lavollia Greene, Hannah Marie Greene White, and brother William Roger Greene; a grandson, Jordan Terrell Houston, and a niece, Linda Greene Smith. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 74 years, Anna Chambers Greene; daughters, Janice Greene Owens (Herbert); Juanita A. Greene, and Natalie Greene Houston (Clifford). Grandchildren: Dr. Keisha K. Owens, Herbert Troye Owens III (Fanny), Stephany Greene Mobley (Timothy), Bryant Nathaniel Greene, Brandon Houston, Meisha Houston; Great Grandchildren: Sorene, Suzy, and Zita Owens, Tayauvion Rothwell, Paige Elizabeth and Timothy James Mobley, King, Queen, and Legacie Greene. Sisters-in-law, Mrs. Frances C. Taylor and Mrs. Dorothy K. Williams. He is also survived by two special cousins, Virginia Hall Reed and Margaret Virginia Greene Mason, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
