Mr. Lemmie Coons Jr.

November 25, 1944 - August 20, 2016

Lemmie "Bugman, Junior, Bubba, Doc" Coons, Jr.,71, departed to his heavenly home on August 20, 2016. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in God supported him in his endeavors to serve His Master. Lemmie was born to the late Lemmie and Anna Catherina “Cat” Coons, Sr., in Mt. Sterling on November 25, 1944. He graduated from Dubois High in 1962 where he was star athlete playing both football and basketball. He later attended Morehead State University. He started working at Crystal Inn as a short order cook. Lemmie was an extremely hard worker and worked several other jobs. He went to work at A.O. Smith, from which he retired after 38 years of service. After retirement he started his own business, Lemky Glo and Shine, where he worked until his death. He was an avid sports fan who could be found listening to Caywood Ledford on the radio through a headset in one ear while watching the same game on the TV. In the pursuit of the love of his life, Gloria “Jean,” in 1963 he accepted Christ’s Abundant Life at Evergreen Baptist Church in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky where he served as Sunday School Superintendent. He continued his faithful service to the Master when he and Sister Coons moved their membership to Broadway Baptist church in 1987. There he began to serve in the following capacities: a loyal Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Youth Teacher, and Vice President of Laymen. He also served as President of the Consolidated District Laymen; he was strong participant of the Eastern Region Missionary. He worked as an officer with General Association of Baptist in Kentucky Laymen. And he was a life member of Mt. Pleasant District Laymen. Lemmie was blessed with a large and loving family. He married his best friend, Gloria Jean Parker, on March 13, 1965 in Mt. Sterling. Lemmie helped raise his five children with patience, discipline and humility. He taught them to read, write and solve complex equations. As a Daddy he could be found supporting his children at band and chorus concerts, cheerleading practices, football, soccer, basketball, and softball games. Anything his five children wanted to explore, he came along for the ride. His children had only one request, that their Daddy would drop them off and pick them up, because they knew their Daddy would always be on time. In demonstration of his love towards his beautiful wife, he would ask her to slow dance in the middle of the living room, which was one of the fondest memories from his children. Lemmie was a kind and soft-spoken, and always had time to answer a question or solve a problem, no matter how small. Many were blessed to see him and Sister Coons fashionably dressed in coordinating colors, sharing in events on Local, District, State, and National levels within the state of Kentucky. Many can proudly say that Lemmie greeted them with a smile. He is dearly missed by his loved ones, who celebrate the fact that he is at peace with his Creator. Lemmie is survived by his loving and supportive of wife of 51 years, Gloria Jean; his mother-in-law, Lela Garrett, and his one and only sister, Jessie Coons; his four beautiful daughters, Lolita (Ira) Brown, Monet (Kelly) Dix, Kimberly (Prentice) Bruton, and Yevette (William) White; his name-sake son, Lemmie (Megan) Coons, III; his grandchildren LaToyia Taylor, Michael Taylor, LaShonda Taylor, Prentice (Austina) Bruton, Jr., Jahon Brown, Dallas Bruton, Javon White, Kiera Pankins, Jessalyn Brown, Catherine-Elizabeth Bruton, Iris Brown, Elise Pankins, Lemmie (Fox) Coons, IV; his great-grandchildren, Desirea Miles, Quaytonia Miles, Ceoyonia Miles, Antowon Bruton, Jordan Bruton, Milania Morais, and Austin Bruton; and his three sisters-in-law, Cardelia Walker, Beverly Daugherty, and Gala Greene. He leaves to cherish a special cousin, Christine Young, and two special neighbors, Charles Crooks and Buford Johnson, as well as a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and many friends. Also his beloved canine companion, Jacques Pierre.
