November 1, 1994 - August 22, 2021
Jamaal Basha Maddox, Jr. was born on November 1, 1994, to Jamaal Basha Maddox and Clora Curtrece Maddox in Louisville, Kentucky. He passed away on Sunday, August 22, 2021, in Tampa, Florida at the age of 26. As a toddler, Jamaal would jump off of the steps and bust his head, but he was so tough that he would just get up and keep on going. This repeated toughness inspired his grandfather, Lendell Maddox, to begin calling him “Rock Head.” Gratefully, it evolved into the more befitting moniker, “J-Roc.” J-Roc moved with his family to Lexington, Kentucky where he first attended Squires Elementary followed by Edith J. Hayes Middle School. In 2013, he graduated from Henry Clay High School where he had played defensive end for the Blue Devils football team. In 2009, J-Roc committed his life to the Lord and was baptized at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Lexington. J-Roc was known for his quick wit, sense of humor and ready laugh. Like his dad, he was a die-hard University of Louisville Cardinals fan. J-Roc also loved anime, particularly Dragon Ball Z and Manga. Furthermore, J-Roc was a superhero fanatic. He was firmly Team Marvel. In 2015, J-Roc joined the Navy and served his country as an Operations Specialist (OS) operating electronic navigation instruments using radar and satellite systems. He moved to Tampa, Florida in 2018 and joined the Navy Reserves. J-Roc was preceded in death by his father, Jamaal Basha Maddox, Sr. He is survived by his mother, Clora “Trece” Black; his stepfather, Troy Black; his sisters, Daija Maddox and KniAnn Wheeler-Black; his brothers, Troy Black, Jr., Zian Black and Trey Slone; his grandparents, Lendell and Violet Maddox, Terry and Gwen Turner, and Debbie Turner; and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins and many friends.
