Mrs. Dorothy Mae McDowell was born August 27, 1921 to the late Anna Mar Payne and George Clay. She was a member of Maddoxtown Baptist Church. She was loving married to and dedicated to the late Rev. James Edward McDowell, Sr. She was known throughout the state as the First Lady fashion icon, always dressed to impressed with matching dress, shoes, purse and, of course, extravagant hats. She serves with distinction in the late 70’s as the president of the Lexington Minister’s Wives. She was a member of the Baptist Women’s Missionary Convention and the Baptist Women’s Education Convention of the General Association of Baptist in Kentucky. She was preceded in death by a son, Ralph Demus. She will be loving remembered by two daughters, Corona Druex, Debra Marshall; two sons, Donald (Valerie) Clay and James Edward McDowell, Jr; twenty grandchildren; twenty great- grandchildren; fourteen great-great- grandchildren; two brothers, James Clay and David Clay; brother-in-law, Louis (Ruth) McDowell; special nephew, James (Ella) Clay, special niece, Pamela Spikes, two stepchildren; and host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and church family.
